The project

A 314 square metre family home on an elevated site, with uninterrupted views across Tauranga Harbour to Mauao. Built in 2020.

Built in 2020, this home balances a traditional look with practical modern living. The architectural brief made the most of the elevated site and the view over Tauranga Harbour to Mount Maunganui.

The exterior combines cedar shingles, timber weatherboards and Otago schist: three natural materials that perform well in a coastal climate and give the house its character.

Inside, the raked high-stud ceilings through the main living areas needed careful detailing to get the clean lines the design called for. The kitchen and butler’s pantry were built for everyday use, and the schist inglenook fireplace anchors the second living room.

The 314 square metre plan has four bedrooms plus a study. The ground floor master suite faces the view, with direct access outside and its own ensuite and wardrobe.
